Our School Year

 September 2013 - July 2014

During the year the Governors have worked closely with the school leadership team to ensure the ‘Learning Improvement Plan’ meets the needs of our school; its pupils, parents and staff. We meet every term to discuss the pupils’ progress and ensure the resources to help them are provided appropriately.

The teaching and learning has continued to improve; standards across the school are good overall. The vast majority (78%) of children in Reception achieved a ‘good level of development’ against national standards. All children made good progress from their starting point and by Christmas were very well settled and secure in school. They have flourished and we are very proud of the way they have all begun their school days. The children in Year 1 have been very confident in their learning and 85% reached the required standard in the National phonics test. Our Year 2 children completed the Key Stage 1 assessments exceeding average levels with 92% exceeding level 2b in Maths, 93% in Reading and 87% in writing. They showed an incredibly mature attitude to learning and a real hunger for knowledge which was delightful.

Our pupils in KS 2 have worked hard too; they have focused on their writing and developed some good skills both in grammar and in writing for purpose. The vast majority of our pupils are in line or above the average for their age.  Our end of KS2 results (Yr6) conveys a complex picture, 93% scored level 4 or above, 85% in writing and 77% in maths. Although some of the figures are below national attainment levels this is the cohort overall, there were some exceptional achievements for the majority of the pupils including a large group who passed the 11+. Some of our children were more challenged for social and emotional reasons which impaired their learning and achievement. The Governors were aware of this cohort and supported the School Leadership Team over several years to provide a wide range of interventions to help the children. Governors are happy that the children’s needs were all well served.

We take an active interest in the wider development of the children, their social activities, the trips and residential visits which engage and excite them and the amazing range of ‘enrichments’ and sports the school staff provide. This has been another very successful year for our teams and individuals in sport competitions including a first – trophies for skiing!

We know you have enjoyed seeing your children in their class assemblies and the excellent celebrations of the Church festivals in which they have performed. The Governors have attended many of these and enjoyed being a part of the school community. We are hugely impressed with the incredible opportunities which have been on offer this year, our staff are very creative and enterprising and we believe St Nicholas is a flourishing school.
