Our Charter which supports OPAL at St Nics

At St Nicholas C of E Primary School, we believe that play is a fundamental part of childhood and plays a vital role in children's happiness, wellbeing and development. Through our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) journey, we have transformed playtimes into rich opportunities for creativity, exploration, teamwork and personal growth. To support this, we have worked together as a school community to create our own St Nicholas OPAL Play Charter.

Our charter has been designed to reflect both the principles of high-quality play and our school vision to Aim High, Be Courageous, Show Love. Rather than being a list of rules imposed on children, the charter represents the values, behaviours and expectations that help everyone enjoy safe, inclusive and meaningful play experiences.

The charter encourages children to make positive choices, respect one another, care for resources and take responsibility for their actions. It supports pupils in developing important life skills such as cooperation, problem-solving, resilience, communication and empathy. These skills help children not only during playtimes but throughout their learning and wider lives.

Each statement within the charter links directly to our vision and Christian values. By choosing activities independently, including others in games, sharing equipment fairly and helping those who need support, children learn what it means to show love in action. By trying new activities, solving problems and developing independence, they learn to be courageous. By taking pride in their play, caring for equipment and contributing positively to our school community, they learn to aim high.

The charter also helps create a shared language across the school so that children, staff and families understand the expectations that make our playtimes safe, successful and enjoyable for everyone. It promotes children's rights to play while also encouraging responsibility, respect and kindness towards others.

Ultimately, our OPAL Play Charter supports our goal of developing happy children, confident learners and a stronger community. It helps ensure that every child feels valued, included and able to enjoy the rich play opportunities available at St Nicholas.
