As St Nic’s philosophers and theologians we are curious, compassionate and we are inclusive

At St Nicholas, Religious Education is rooted in our Christian vision:

"Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."
1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Through RE, children are encouraged to aim high in their learning, be courageous in exploring life's big questions and show love through respect, understanding and compassion for others. We want every child to flourish as a unique individual, confident in expressing their own beliefs and values while appreciating those of others.

Our RE Curriculum

Following the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus from Reception to Year 6, pupils develop an understanding of Christianity alongside a range of religious and non-religious worldviews. Through the disciplines of Theology, Philosophy, Human and Social Sciences and History, children explore how beliefs and worldviews shape individuals, communities and societies.

Learning is organised around seven core concepts:

  • Belonging and Believing
  • Wisdom and Guidance
  • Personal Responsibility
  • Living Well
  • Authority and Power
  • Change
  • Grand Narratives

Children encounter Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Humanist, Pagan and other worldviews, developing the knowledge, understanding and respect needed to engage with the diverse world around them.

Living out our vision

RE is about far more than learning about religions. It helps children live out our vision every day by:

  • Aiming High through knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
  • Being Courageous by asking challenging questions and developing their own informed viewpoints.
  • Showing Love and Kindness through empathy, respect and compassion for others.

As St Nic's philosophers and theologians, children learn to be curious about the world around them, compassionate towards others and inclusive in their attitudes and actions.

Our partnership with St Nicholas Church

Our close relationship with St Nicholas Church enriches children's understanding of Christianity as a lived faith. Throughout the year, children lead Harvest, Christmas and Easter services, church representatives lead weekly Collective Worship, and the Children and Families Worker runs our Kindness Group.

Pupils also take on leadership roles through the Prayer and Reflection Council, working alongside the RE Lead to help shape worship and spiritual life across the school.

In addition, children participate in termly Understanding Christianity Days, providing opportunities to explore key Christian concepts, celebrate our distinctiveness as a Church school and deepen links between RE, Collective Worship and our Christian vision.

Developing the whole child

Inspired by the Parable of the Good Samaritan, RE makes a significant contribution to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

By the time children leave St Nicholas, we want them to love learning, value themselves and others, think deeply about the world around them and contribute positively to society. Through our vision to Aim High, Be Courageous, Show Love and Kindness, we nurture St Nic's philosophers and theologians who are curious, compassionate and inclusive, equipped to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with the diverse world around them.

The National Curriculum and RE

Religious Education is a statutory subject for all pupils. At St Nicholas, we follow the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education from Reception to Year 6. Pupils study Christianity alongside a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, including the perspectives of people with no religious faith.

Through enquiry, discussion and reflection, children explore life's 'big questions', consider different viewpoints and develop their understanding of how beliefs and values influence individuals, communities and society. In doing so, RE makes an important contribution to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and supports the wider aims of the National Curriculum.
